【Learn Chinese】Chinese Calligraphy – The Art of Chinese

Chinese calligraphy (书法, shū fǎ) is a traditional Chinese art form that combines writing and beauty. It’s not only a way to write Chinese characters (汉字, hàn zì) but also a way to understand Chinese culture and aesthetics.
For Chinese language learners, learning calligraphy vocabulary and basic knowledge can help you better appreciate Chinese characters and improve your understanding of their structure—all while practicing pinyin and new words.

First, let’s learn the basic tools of calligraphy, called the “Four Treasures of the Study” (文房四宝, wén fáng sì bǎo). They are: 毛笔 (máo bǐ, writing brush), 宣纸 (xuān zhǐ, rice paper), 墨 (mò, ink), and 砚台 (yàn tái, ink stone). The writing brush is the most important tool—its soft hair allows calligraphers to create different strokes (笔画, bǐ huà) and styles. For example, you can say “我有一支新的毛笔” (wǒ yǒu yī zhī xīn de máo bǐ), meaning “I have a new writing brush.”
Calligraphy has many styles, but the most common ones for beginners are 楷书 (kǎi shū, regular script) and 行书 (xíng shū, running script). Regular script is neat and clear, perfect for beginners to practice basic strokes—such as 横 (héng, horizontal stroke), 竖 (shù, vertical stroke), and 撇 (piě, left-falling stroke). Running script is more fluent and natural, often used in daily writing.
Learning calligraphy is not just about writing—it’s about patience and practice. You can start with simple characters, like 人 (rén, person) or 山 (shān, mountain), and practice their strokes with a writing brush. As you practice, you’ll learn words like 临摹 (lín mó, copy) and 落款 (luò kuǎn, sign one’s name on the work). For example, “我每天临摹楷书” (wǒ měi tiān lín mó kǎi shū), meaning “I copy regular script every day.”

Calligraphy connects Chinese language and culture—each stroke carries the beauty of Chinese characters, and each work reflects the calligrapher’s mood. For learners, it’s a fun way to practice Chinese, appreciate art, and understand the depth of Chinese culture.
