【Learn Chinese】Happy Birthday!

Birthdays are a universal celebration, and learning Chinese through birthday vocabulary is not only fun but also practical! Whether you’re celebrating your own birthday (生日, shēng rì) or a friend’s, knowing these key words and phrases will help you join in the joy and practice your Chinese with pinyin (拼音, pīn yīn) at the same time. Let’s dive into the most common birthday-related vocabulary that every Chinese learner should know.

First, the most basic word: birthday is 生日 (shēng rì). You can say “zhù nǐ shēng rì kuài lè” (祝你生日快乐, Happy birthday to you)—the most important phrase for any birthday celebration! The person having the birthday is the birthday person, or 寿星 (shòu xīng) in Chinese. For example, “tā shì jīn tiān de shòu xīng” (他是今天的寿星, He is today’s birthday person).
No birthday is complete without a birthday cake—生日蛋糕 (shēng rì dàn gāo). You might hear someone say “wǒ men yào diào yī gè shēng rì dàn gāo” (我们要订一个生日蛋糕, We need to order a birthday cake). On the cake, we usually put candles—蜡烛 (là zhú). After lighting the candles, everyone sings the birthday song and the birthday person makes a wish—愿望 (yuàn wàng), then blows out the candles (吹蜡烛, chuī là zhú).
Birthday gifts are also a big part of the celebration! Birthday gift is 生日礼物 (shēng rì lǐ wù). You can say “wǒ gěi nǐ dài le shēng rì lǐ wù” (我给你带了生日礼物, I brought you a birthday gift). Another common term is birthday party—生日派对 (shēng rì pài duì). For example, “wǒ men yào jǔ bàn yī gè shēng rì pài duì” (我们要举办一个生日派对, We are going to hold a birthday party).

Learning these words lets you fully participate in birthday celebrations and communicate with Chinese friends easily. Try practicing with simple sentences: “jīn tiān shì wǒ de shēng rì” (今天是我的生日, Today is my birthday) or “zhè shì wǒ de shēng rì lǐ wù” (这是我的生日礼物, This is my birthday gift).
