【Learn Chinese】Learn Chinese Through Farm Animals

Learning Chinese becomes much more interesting when you connect it to daily life—especially to the cute and familiar farm animals we all know! Whether you’re a beginner or looking to expand your basic vocabulary, farm animals are a perfect starting point. They’re easy to remember, often tied to simple sentences, and let you practice pronunciation with pinyin (拼音, pīn yīn) at the same time.

Let’s explore some common farm animals in Chinese and how to use their names in simple ways.
First, the king of the farm—the cow, which is 牛 (niú) in Chinese. You might hear farmers call a cow “niú” when feeding it, and it’s a key word in phrases like “niú nǎi” (牛奶, milk). Next is the chicken, or 鸡 (jī). A mother chicken is a “mǔ jī” (母鸡, hen), and a baby chicken is a “xiǎo jī” (小鸡, chick)—so cute! Kids love saying “xiǎo jī jiào” (小鸡叫, the chick crows) when practicing speaking.
No farm is complete without a pig, known as 猪 (zhū) in Chinese. It’s a fun word to pronounce, and you’ll often see it in children’s songs. Then there’s the sheep—羊 (yáng). A fluffy sheep is “máo róng róng de yáng” (毛茸茸的羊), and “yáng máo” (羊毛, wool) comes from this gentle animal. Don’t forget the duck: 鸭 (yā). Ducks like to swim, so we can say “yā zài shuǐ lǐ yóu” (鸭在水里游, the duck swims in the water).
Learning these words isn’t just about memorization—it’s about using them. Try pointing to a picture of a cow and saying “zhè shì niú” (这是牛, this is a cow), or asking your friend “nǐ xǐ huān zhū ma?” (你喜欢猪吗, do you like pigs?). Farm animals make Chinese learning lively and relatable, turning new words into fun memories.
Next time you see a farm animal, practice its Chinese name—you’ll be surprised how quickly your vocabulary grows.
