Born from Legend:

Legend traces Lianpu back to the Tang Dynasty (唐朝 - Táng Cháo). A general, Meng Liang (孟良), painted mystical patterns on his soldiers' faces to scare enemies. This evolved into a sophisticated system used in opera, especially for the "Jing" (净) roles – the bold, painted-face heroes, villains, and spirits. Forget simple masks; Lianpu is painted directly onto the performer's skin (勾画 - gōuhuà), becoming part of their living expression.

 

A Rainbow of Meaning:

Every stroke and color shouts meaning! Lianpu uses a symbolic palette:

Red (红色 - Hóngsè): Loyalty, courage, righteousness. Think Guan Yu (关羽 - Guān Yǔ), the mighty warrior god.

Black (黑色 - Hēisè): Fierceness, integrity, boldness. Bao Zheng (包拯 - Bāo Zhěng), the legendary fair judge, wears a black face.
