事与愿违 [shì yǔ yuàn wéi]
get the opposite of what one wants; The result is [turns out] contrary to one's expectations.; not go according to plan
事情的发展与愿望相反,指事情没能按照预想的方向发展。
 
与:和 with
违:违背,违反 against
 
E.g.
wǒ men shēng huó zhōng sì hū yǒu xǔ duō shì yǔ yuàn wéi de qíng kuàng。
我们生活中似乎有许多事与愿违的情况。
It'seems that many things in our lives go by contraries.
 
tā de jì huà shì yǔ yuàn wéi , yīn cǐ tā de qián quán kuī diào le。
他的计划事与愿违,因此他的钱全亏掉了。
His plan backfired on him , and he lost all his money.
 
 
hǎo xīn bàn huài shì,zhēn shì shì yǔ yuàn wéi。
好心办坏事,真是事与愿违。
Good intentions bring about bad results-things go contrary to one's wishes.
